Monte del Sol Charter School

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Grades 7 – 12, 370 students

www.montedelsol.org

                           Head of School Search for July 1, 2014

Monte del Sol Charter School is seeking a Head Learner (Principal) who will lead a community of teachers and students in the further development of one of the most successful charters in the Southwest.  Founded in December of 1999 and opened in August, 2000, our School has grown steadily in size and quality over the course of its existence. Started in the Boys and Girls Club of downtown Santa Fe, the School next moved to a vacant office building in a local shopping center and eventually, in 2003, to a purpose-built facility in a residential neighborhood on the southwest side of Santa Fe.

Our mission-driven School aims to challenge each member of the campus community, both youth and adult, to be a life-long learner and a responsible citizen, and to support the education necessary for each student to realize his or her potential.  To these ends, we provide a small school so that each individual is known; we acknowledge and celebrate the diversity of our community members; we connect students with adults in a dynamic mentorship program; we foster awareness of the world with international exchange and language programs; we embrace the arts, cultural activities, and technology as means of learning and personal expression; and we include principles of sustainability throughout the program.

As a public charter school, Monte del Sol is open to all students in grades 7 – 12, tuition free.  Admission is based on a lottery system.  Students come to us from all over Santa Fe County and from widely varying backgrounds.  Our demographic mirrors the Santa Fe Public Schools, our authorizing agency, but our students outperform their peers in the district and the state by wide margins. Our graduation requirements exceed the minimums set by the state and, in a typical year, over 90% of our graduates go on to some form of higher education in New Mexico or across the country.

The Position.  Monte del Sol’s Head Learner is hired by and reports to the Governing Board.  The Board establishes policy for the School in accordance with its by-laws, the terms of its charter and New Mexico statutes. The Head Learner is expected to:

  • Provide proactive, energetic, inspiring leadership to the School and be enthusiastically supportive of Monte del Sol’s mission;
  • Foster a learning environment characterized by high academic standards, student-centered instruction, innovation and a balance between the academic and the extracurricular;
  • Work closely with the Governing Board and its committees to ensure compliance with state and district expectations and to maintain clear boundaries between policy development and implementation;
  • Oversee daily operations including safety, student support, the quality of instruction, behavior management and finances;
  • Continue to implement a rigorous student assessment program aligned with state and Common Core standards;
  • Meet the goals that comprise the 2013-18 Strategic Plan;
  • Work with the faculty and the board to develop forward-thinking strategies to tackle key pedagogical and programmatic challenges;
  • Ensure the transparency and collaborative nature of decision-making and inclusive communication standards;
  • Collaborate with the Foundation for Monte del Sol to secure the additional resources needed to underwrite our signature programs;
  • Maintain a dynamic and visible presence on campus and off, cultivating relationships with members of the School and local communities;
  • Preserve and improve lines of communication between the School and our authorizer, SFPS;
  • Work with the Board Finance Committee and the Business Manager skillfully to build and manage the budget;
  • Teach one section per semester in his or her area of expertise.

Professional Qualifications.  The ideal candidate will have prior experience in school leadership – as a division head, head of school or principal at a charter, traditional public or independent school – and at least five years of secondary school teaching experience.  He or she will have an appropriate advanced degree and hold or be able to obtain a New Mexico Administrative license.  Additionally, this individual will

  • Be passionately committed to students in grades 7 – 12;
  • Be an inspiring leader and communicator, with a sense of humor;
  • Value and affirmatively demonstrate a strong commitment to cultural, racial, gender and economic diversity;
  • Possess the highest standards of integrity and character;
  • Have an inclusive, accessible style, comfortable with delegation and collaboration;
  • Be enthusiastic about helping lead the School to the next level of excellence.
