NMCCS Response to the Alibi:

Whereas we agree with many of the opinions stated in the article entitled "Expanding The Achievement Gap", by Maggie Grimason, we are dismayed by the plethora of untruths about our NM charter schools. The NM charter school movement is unique in that many of our charter schools have deliberately targeted, as their primary missions, disadvantaged, special needs, and ELL students. If anything, charter schools are closing the "chasm of inequality". By law, charter schools are prohibited from "selecting" the students they enroll. Many charter schools provide free transportation and intentionally select locations on city bus routes to guarantee equal access to all students. The references to a "mayor’s" influence over and control of charter schools clearly indicates that this writer does not know our state. There are two authorizing entities in NM, neither of which is the mayor’s office. We would hope that the author of this article, and the Alibi would have done some fact-checking before going to press.
