Ron is a graduate of Albuquerque's Valley High School and Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California where he earned a BA degree in Economics and Business Administration and a BS degree in Psychology.
Ron is retired after a career with the US Department of the Interior. His last position was Deputy Regional Director for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Ron's experience in education includes the following positions and activities:
Chairman of the New Mexico Commission on Higher Education - 2 terms (1991 thru 2001).
Committees: Executive, Technology, Education Programs, Planning, Capitol Projects, Native American Programs, Distance Education.
Member of the Governor’s Business Executives for Education Committee; (1992 thru 2001);
Member of the New Mexico Virtual University Advisory Committee;
Member of the Western Governor’s University Task Force;
Member of the Board of Directors for New Futures School in Albuquerque;
Author of the vision and policy statement for the future of higher education in New Mexico,
published in the Albuquerque Tribune.
Served on the Century University Alumni Association Board:
Served on the Santa Fe Indian School “Youth Leadership Development” Committee.
Ron was commencement speaker at the University of New Mexico –Taos and the New Mexico Junior College.
He has lectured on Tribal Sovereignty at Western New Mexico University and for St. Olaf College in Minnesota in their History Program on “Indians of the Southwest”;
Ron was also keynote speaker at Washington and Jefferson College Colloquium, an international forum on “Territorial Rights of Nations and Peoples”.
My name is Erik Bose and I am the Executive Director of ABQ Charter Academy. I have been working in education since 1993. I started as a High School Soccer Coach as I worked my way through college. I attended UNM and earned my BA in History/Education in 1996 and eventually became licensed as a Special Education teacher. My first teaching job was at Manzano High School from 1996-2000 where I taught Special Education classes and coached the varsity soccer team to a state championship. Then I transferred and taught inclusion classes at McKinley Middle School from 2000-2004. While at MMS, I was accepted into the CEAIP program at UNM where I earned my Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership in 2004.
That same year, I was hired at SIATech Charter High School and worked my way up through the classroom, to assistant principal, to principal and now I am the ED of ABQ Charter Academy. I currently hold board positions for the NM Association of Secondary School Administrators, Gordon Bernell Charter High School, NM Coalition of Charter Schools and I’m the President for the NM Coalition of Educational Leaders. I am proud to make education my profession.
Carlos Rey Romero
Carlos Rey Romero is the Associate Vice President (AVP) for Research and Economic Development at
New Mexico Tech. His portfolio includes serving as the deputy to the Vice President for Research,
external relations, financial oversight and strategic analysis. In his position, he also serves as the Board
Treasurer for the National Cave and Karst Research Institute and Board Secretary for the New Mexico
Prior to joining New Mexico Tech, he was at the University of New Mexico where he served in several
positions over 12 years. AVP for Research & Compliance (2013-2016), Managing Director of the Institute
of Policy, Evaluation and Applied Research (2015-2016), Director of the Center for Education Policy
Research (2014-2015), AVP for Research Administration (2007-2013) and AVP for Government &
Community Relations (2004-2007). Prior to joining UNM, Mr. Romero served as financial advisor and
director of intergovernmental relations at the New Mexico Finance Authority (2001-2004) where he
provided advice and expert testimony in the area of public finance, planning and infrastructure
development to two governors, the New Mexico state legislature and local government leaders.
Mr. Romero is the Board President for the Alice King Community School Foundation, has been a member
of the Alice King Community School Governing Council for 8 years (serving as Board President for four
years) and was Board Vice-President of the New Mexico Coalition for Charter Schools. Mr. Romero
served for eight years (2008-2016) as an appointed member of the President’s Export Council
Subcommittee on Export Administration (PECSEA) where he is a member of the Outreach Committee
where he helps to inform international commerce discussions at the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Mr. Romero was a visiting professor of economics at The Armand Hammer United World College in
Montezuma, New Mexico; a visiting professor at New Mexico Highland University and a lecturer at Luna
Community College. He focused his teaching and research in the areas of economics, ethics and physics.
Mr. Romero was American Chemical Society (ACS) fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory working
in the Condensed Matter and Thermal Physics Division.
Mr. Romero was raised in the north central town of Española, New Mexico. He received his B.S. from
New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) where he majored in Basic Sciences
and Chemical Engineering, an MBA from the New Mexico Highlands University and is A.B.D in
Educational Leadership from The University of New Mexico. He, his wife and their son live in
Caryl Thomas has been active in the New Mexico charter movement since 2004. In July of that year, she opened the doors of Cesar Chavez Community School, a charter high school in Albuquerque serving at-risk students. She served as the Director/Principal of the school until her retirement in June 2015. Caryl joined the NMCCS board in 2010 as a school member and continues to serve as an at-large member since retirement. She brings many years of experience working at the local and state levels in support of the charter movement in New Mexico
Glenna Voigt is a WK Kellogg Fellow and the former Founding Principal of the Media Arts Collaborative Charter School (MACCS) in Albuquerque, New Mexico’s first State-Authorized Charter School. Glenna’s previous career paths have included being a photographer in the US Air Force and an English Instructor in Tokyo, Japan. As a creator of media and an Educator, Glenna believes that media is essential for students’ learning within the 21st Century. Whether by using media as a tool for self-expression or as a medium for demonstrating learning and creativity, students’ ability to deconstruct meaning from media is vital to their development and intellectual capacity. “Media exists in everyone’s lives. When we can exemplify the positive changes we want to see in our communities via media, we are creatively bringing people together to share in that potential.”
Bob moved to New Mexico when he was five years old and raised a family in Albuquerque and Corrales. He attended Albuquerque Public Schools, Pomona College, where he earned a B.A. in Government, and University of Maryland where he earned an M.S. in Healthcare Management with honors. Bob founded an Albuquerque-based medical technology company, Monitech, Inc., at the age of 24, and sold it in 2008 after 25 years of successful operation. He was elected to two terms to the New Mexico House of Representatives representing parts of Sandoval County where he wrote and passed the original NM Charter School Act. He served on the governing board of Taylor Middle School when it was a charter school, served on the NM charter school task force and co-founded the charter school Public Academy for Performing Arts. He became a U.S. Diplomat in January 2010 and served in Germany, Canada, Pakistan and The Gambia. He returned full-time to New Mexico in the spring of 2015 and lives in Corrales with his wife, Joan. Currently he is SVP of Sales and Marketing for Visual Health Solutions, a healthcare IT company.
He speaks German, tries to speak Spanish and is an avid cyclist, skier and martial artist. He is married and has four grown children.
